Biosketch

  • 저는 현재 바이오및뇌공학과 부교수 및 뇌인지공학 프로그램 책임교수로 재직중인 이상완이라고 합니다. 2019년에는 KAIST 신경과학-인공지능 융합연구센터를 설립하여 현재까지 연구 센터장을 맡고 있습니다.
  • 저는 2009년 KAIST에서 인공지능 제어 시스템 연구로 학위를 받은 뒤, MIT와 Caltech에서 이러한 개념을 뇌과학에 적용하는 연구를 하였습니다. 계산뇌과학과 인공지능 연구의 독창성과 우수성을 인정받아 2016년에는 구글 교수 연구상, 2021년에는 IBM 학술상을 수상하였고, 그 외에 KAIST 송암미래석학 연구상, KI 융합연구상, KAIST 국제협력상, KAIST 국제협력 연구상 등을 수상한 바 있습니다. 우리 연구실은 2013년 과기정통부 SW스타랩 (AI분야)으로 선정되었습니다.
  • 저의 연구의 궁극적인 목표는 ‘뇌처럼 생각하는 인공지능’을 만드는 것입니다. 이를 위해 뇌의 학습과 추론과 같은 고위수준 기능을 이해하는 연구에 집중하고 있습니다. 연구 접근 방법은 크게 두 가지로 나뉘는데, 먼저 뇌과학 실험을 통해 인공지능 만들어 봄으로써 기계학습의 관점에서 뇌의 정보처리 과정을 이해하고 (“Brain↦AI”), 이어 실험으로부터 도출된 계산 모델을 거꾸로 새로운 실험에 적용함으로써 뇌가 왜 이렇게 동작하는지를 이해해 나가고 있습니다 (“AI↦Brain”).
