- Professor Pann-Ghill Suh is a globally recognized scholar who has made pioneering contributions to establishing a new paradigm in bio-medical signal transduction, one of the fundamental mechanisms underlying life processes. His work has significantly elevated the international standing of Korean science and technology while strengthening the nation’s research foundation.
- He was the first in the world to isolate and characterize three prototypes of Phosphatidyl inositol phospholipase C (PLC) enzymes from the brain, clone their genes, and elucidate their functions at the molecular, cellular, and organismal levels. He has published more than 400 papers in leading scientific journals and delivered over 90 invited lectures at international conferences. In recognition of these achievements, he was selected as a National Scholar of Korea in 2007 and received the Asan Award in Medicine (2014), one of Korea’s most prestigious private-sector honors, as well as the Korea Top Scientist and Technologist Award (2020), the nation’s highest scientific honor.
- Professor Suh has also played a leading role in shaping Korea’s national R&D strategies and advancing research capacity through his service as Chair of the National Committee for Basic Research Promotion, Chair of the Ministry of Science and ICT Basic and Fundamental Research Promotion Committee, and President of the Korean Association of University Research and Industry Cooperation Leaders. In recognition of these distinguished contributions, he was awarded the Order of Science and Technology Merit, Innovation Medal, in 2024.
- He has further provided visionary leadership in building advanced research infrastructure and fostering outstanding scientific talent through his positions as President of the Korea Brain Research Institute, Vice President for Research and Director of the Convergence Research Institute at Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology, and Dean of Research Affairs and Dean of Natural Sciences at Pohang University of Science and Technology.
- More recently, he has focused on establishing predictive frameworks for biological responses based on signal transduction pathways triggered by external stimuli, as well as interpreting the pathogenesis of brain disorders from the perspective of cellular signaling mechanisms.
